February is Black History Month, a time to honor the achievements, contributions, and lasting impact of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history. It is also an opportunity for our students to learn about influential leaders, innovators, artists, and everyday heroes whose courage and perseverance have shaped our communities and country.
At school, classrooms will engage in age-appropriate learning experiences that highlight stories of resilience, excellence, and positive change. As we celebrate, we remain committed to fostering a culture of belonging where every student feels seen, valued, and empowered. We encourage families to continue these conversations at home and join us in recognizing the rich history and contributions that make our community stronger.
Over the past few weeks, we have made a few adjustments to our lunchroom procedures to better support student safety, health, and supervision.
First, we have returned to consistent House-based seating. This helps us quickly locate students, strengthens our House community connections, and ensures smoother transitions. With clear seating structures, students are able to settle more quickly and maximize their eating time.
In response to an increase in seasonal illnesses, we have also reduced the number of shared items during lunch. Students will no longer share cleaning rags or access a communal “share bin” for food. These steps limit unnecessary contact with the same items and help reduce the spread of germs.
Additionally, adults will now handle end-of-lunch cleaning tasks. This ensures surfaces are sanitized appropriately while allowing students to focus on eating and transitioning calmly to recess.
All of these adjustments are designed with one primary goal in mind: making sure students have enough time to eat, feel safe, and are easy for staff to supervise and locate at all times.

Notes from the Nest
Dear Families,
This week in our SEL learning, we are reinforcing an important life skill: reporting worries, conflicts, or unsafe situations to a trusted adult right away.
We are teaching students that small problems can become big problems when adults don’t know about them. Conflicts on the playground, in line, during transitions, or around the school can almost always be resolved quickly when students let staff know immediately. Our adults are here to help — but we can only intervene if we are aware of what’s happening.
We are encouraging students to:
• Identify trusted adults at school
• Use clear words to describe what happened
• Report concerns right away rather than waiting
• Understand that telling an adult to get help is different from “tattling”
This skill builds self-advocacy, safety awareness, and confidence. It also helps us maintain a positive and respectful school community for everyone.
You can support this at home by asking:
“Who are your trusted adults at school?”
“If something felt uncomfortable or unfair today, did you let someone know?”
“What could you say if you needed help?”
Thank you for partnering with us in teaching students to speak up and seek support. When students and adults work together, we can solve problems quickly and help everyone feel safe and included.

Counselor Corner
Hello KLE families
This month, students across all grade levels focused on how our words impact others. Our older grades explored respect and civility—being respectful, kind, and fair, even when we disagree or feel upset. Students learned that respectful communication helps everyone feel safe, supports learning, and allows us to solve problems while showing strong character. Our younger grades learned about integrity, or acting in ways we know are right in all situations. Through hands-on materials and simple experiments, they discovered how dishonesty works and how it can affect others. These lessons remind us that kind, honest words help build a caring school community.

Dear KLE Families,
We want to share an important update with you. At this time, we will no longer have a nurse on site at our building due to shifting needs across the district.
Our staff will continue to care for students to the very best of our ability. Teachers will be supporting the office by helping contact families throughout the day if your student needs to be picked up or if we need to communicate about a health concern.
We ask for your patience and grace as we adjust to this change. Our priority will always be student safety and well-being, and we appreciate your partnership and understanding as we work together to support our students. If you have any questions or specific medical concerns regarding your child, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your continued support! 💙

Bremerton School District is committed to supporting the social, emotional, and behavioral health of students. The insights gathered from SEL surveys are invaluable to school staff, as they help to better understand students' emotional well-being and social interactions. This data plays a crucial role in creating supportive environments and targeted interventions that foster student success. This information will help schools and staff understand the needs of students at both the individual and school level.
Families who wish to opt out of the SEL survey, should contact their child's homeroom teacher or counselor to express this decision prior to 3/27. The teacher or counselor will guide them through the opt-out process and ensure the student is excluded from the survey. It is important for families to communicate their request before the survey is administered to ensure it is processed in time. Afterward, families will receive confirmation that the student will not participate in the survey.

Our district is looking to add a few more parents to the District Advisory Council, and we would love your help! This council provides families an opportunity to share feedback, ask questions, and help guide important district decisions. We are hoping to connect with parents beyond our PTA/PTO groups. The next meeting will take place on March 4 from 4:00–5:00 PM. If you’re interested in participating or would like more information, please reach out to our main office at (360) 473-4300.

February Trait- Honesty
The focus for February is practicing Honesty to help with emotion awareness. It’s not always easy to be Honest in our words, actions, or thoughts with others or with ourselves. Practicing Honesty with ourselves allows us to identify emotions, be aware of our emotions, and manage our emotions.
