SEL Spotlight

Notes from the Nest

Dear Families,

One of our goals at school is to make sure that recess is a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable time for all students. Recess is an important part of the school day where children can move their bodies, build friendships, and practice the social skills they are learning in the classroom.

Recently, we have noticed that highly competitive ball games, such as soccer and football, have been leading to disagreements and conflicts among students. Some of our students are on sports teams outside of school and are having a difficult time playing safely and equitably without the guidance of a coach and referees. In order to help create a more positive recess experience for everyone, we will be pausing competitive ball sports during recess for the time being.

During this time, students will still have many fun and active choices at recess. Staff will be encouraging games and activities that help students move, connect, and play together in positive ways. Some of the activities students may choose include:

  • Two-finger tag

  • Hula hoops

  • Gaga ball

  • Obstacle courses

  • Jump rope

  • Four square

  • Chalk drawing

  • Cooperative playground games

  • Walking and talking with friends

  • Imaginative play on the playground structures

Our goal is to give students opportunities to enjoy recess while also practicing important skills like kindness, inclusion, teamwork, and problem solving.

We will continue to monitor recess and our amazing PE teacher Mrs. Bowman will be teaching students strategies for positive play so that, over time, we can reintroduce more structured games in ways that support all students.

Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us create a safe and supportive school community for every child.

Warmly,

SEL Dean of Students

Counselor Corner

Message from the counselor

Why Career exploration at the elementary level? Because it helps students begin connecting their interests, strengths, and values to the world of work. At this age, the goal isn’t choosing a career—it’s building curiosity, confidence, and awareness of the many paths people can take in life. Early exposure helps children see the relevance of what they are learning in school and encourages them to dream broadly about their future.

At home:
During everyday moments—like driving, shopping, or watching a show—point out different jobs people do and talk with your child about what skills those jobs might require. Asking simple questions like “What do you think that person’s job is?” or “Would you enjoy doing something like that?” can spark meaningful conversations about interests and possibilities.

Supporting your student’s future,

Jenn Uniszkiewicz
