Have you ever wondered what our staff is working on during Early Release Wednesdays? This past week, our Dean, Mrs. Crisp, and Counselor, Mrs. U, guided our team through a deep review of our Student Belonging data, looking closely at results for each individual student. Our grade-level teams used this time to plan supports at the whole-class, small-group, and individual levels, ensuring that every student is known, supported, and connected. We’re proud to share that in our most recent spring SEL survey, 93% of Kitsap Lake Elementary K–5 students reported feeling a sense of belonging at school. This is meaningful progress, and we remain committed to continuing this work until every student feels that same connection. Through our ongoing focus on belonging, including the continued implementation of our house system, we will keep building a school community where all students feel welcomed, valued, and a true sense of belonging.
Best Regards,
Principal Takata

Notes from the Nest
Dear Families,
I’m reaching out to share a trend we’ve been noticing across KLE. Recently, there has been an increase in students talking over their teacher during instruction. This makes it difficult for all students to focus, learn, and feel respected in the classroom community.
At school, we are reinforcing clear expectations around respectful listening, taking turns speaking, and allowing everyone the opportunity to learn without interruption. To support this, students who struggle with talking during instruction will be asked to complete a brief reflection sheet. This reflection helps them think about their choices, how their actions impact others, and what they can do differently next time.
Teachers will share these completed reflection sheets with families through ParentSquare. If your student fills out a reflection sheet, we encourage you to take a few moments to review it with your student and have a conversation at home. When students see that school and home are working together, it makes a big difference in helping them build positive habits.
You might consider asking:
- What was happening in class when you were talking?
- How did it affect your teacher or classmates?
- What can you do next time to show respectful listening?
We appreciate your partnership in helping all students develop strong communication skills and a positive learning environment. If you have any questions or would like to connect further, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your continued support,
Maura Crisp

Counselor Corner
Hello KLE families,
This month I will be continuing to use the Second Step program, which helps students build social skills, succeed in school, and contribute to a safe, supportive learning environment.
As part of this program, students will also participate in the Child Protection Unit. These lessons teach children how to recognize unsafe situations, seek help from trusted adults, understand personal safety (including safe and unsafe touch), and refuse or report anything that makes them uncomfortable.
If you have questions or prefer your child not participate, please contact the school counselor at jennifer.uniszkiewicz@bremertonschools.org or at 360-473-4330. You can also visit SecondStep.org (create an account and use activation key: CPUK FAMI LYGK) for more information.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our school safe and supportive.

SBA testing will begin next week for our students. We kindly ask for your support in ensuring your child arrives at school on time on testing days. Testing will begin promptly at 9:30 AM, and students who arrive late will need to make up any missed portions during a scheduled make-up day.
We appreciate your partnership in helping set students up for success, encourage them to do their best and come ready to shine!

We’re excited to share a short video from Ms. Piper’s class! In this clip, students explain what happens to the water that goes down the storm drains on our playground. They walk us through its journey as it travels through our community and eventually makes its way to Puget Sound. It’s a great look at how our everyday actions connect to the environment, take a moment to watch and learn alongside them!
