Counselor Corner
Dear Families,
Over the next week, we will be wrapping up our Second Step safety lessons. During these lessons, students have been learning about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches and how to respond in situations that make them feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
Students learned: • Unwanted touches are touches that are not wanted or make someone feel uncomfortable. • Unsafe touches are touches where someone gets hurt, such as pushing, hitting, or anything that causes harm. • Safe touches are gentle, caring touches, such as kind hugs or gentle pats that help people feel cared for and supported.
We also discussed the Rule About Private Parts:
- A person should never touch your private body parts except to help keep you healthy or safe (for example, a parent helping with care or a doctor during a check-up with a trusted adult present).
- Students also learned that they should never touch someone else’s private body parts.
We explained private body parts as the parts of the body covered by a bathing suit.
I encourage you to continue these conversations at home and talk with your child about safety and trusted adults they can go to for help.
Thank you for partnering with us to support student safety and well-being. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at jennifer.uniszkiewicz@bremertonschools.org
Best regards,
Jenn Uniszkiewicz
