Eagle Update from Principal Nygard

Hello Eagle Families,

No School Monday, October 12: Indigenous Peoples’ Day

There is no school this Monday, October 12, in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This day honors the history, cultures, and contributions of Native peoples, the first people of this land, and recognizes their resilience and continuing presence in our communities today. We encourage you to celebrate together as a family. You might read a book by an Indigenous author, visit a local cultural center or museum, or talk with your children about the Native nations of our region. We look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday, October 13.

Launching and Landing the Day

How our children start and end each day matters.

Launch the day: A steady morning routine (wake-up, breakfast, getting ready, out the door) helps children arrive calm and ready to learn. Send them off with positive anticipation: “What are you looking forward to today?”

Land the day: Keep a consistent evening routine, and take a few minutes to reconnect:

  • Celebrate: “What went well today?”
  • Problem-solve: “Was anything hard? Tell me how you worked through that?”
  • Empower: Encourage your child to be clear, kind, and assertive. Remind them that they can go to the adults who support recess when they need help, and that they can talk directly with their teachers.

When we coach our children to speak up and work through challenges, we help them grow into confident leaders and problem solvers. Thank you for partnering with us.

Enjoy the long weekend!

SEL Spotlight

Notes from the Nest

Our bodies often give us clues about our emotions before we even recognize what we're feeling! Big feelings can show up as a racing heart, tight muscles, butterflies in our stomach, or extra energy.

In the Nest, we're helping students recognize these body clues and build emotional regulation skills through three simple steps:

  • Notice It! Pay attention to what your body is telling you.

  • Name It! Identify the emotion connected to those feelings.

  • Navigate It! Choose a strategy to help, like deep breathing, taking a break, or asking for support.

Try This at Home!

Instead of asking, "How was your day?" try asking:

  • "What was one feeling you had today?"

  • "What helped you feel better?"

  • "What could you try next time you have that feeling?"

Remember: All feelings are okay, but not all behaviors are safe. Helping children identify their emotions is the first step toward learning how to manage them!

Counselor Corner

Our K–2 Eagles are learning important conflict resolution skills using Kelso’s Choices! Students are practicing how to solve small problems independently by choosing safe, respectful strategies, such as: taking turns, sharing, walking away, making a deal, apologizing, wait and cool off, talk it out, ignore it, or play another game. We are also learning the difference between small problems that we can work through ourselves and big problems that require help from a trusted adult.

How can families help at home? Encourage your child to talk through small disagreements, brainstorm possible solutions, and choose a safe and respectful strategy. You can ask, “Is this a small problem or a big problem?” and “Which of Kelso’s Choices could you try?” Remind your child that it is always okay to ask a trusted adult for help when a problem feels too big or someone is unsafe.

Together, we can help our Eagles build independence, strengthen friendships, and grow their problem-solving skills!
